Selfie stick - should it be banned or not???

The video, to me, wasn't a favourite. I didn't laugh or find it a serious thing. It conveyed a message that I can agree with but it's a pretty nonsensical thing. Of course people are going to be careful, it's common sense to be careful with an object that can harm people but making an entire video exaggerating the effects and dangers of a selfie stick is something I find to be dumb. I do understand the video was probably made to be humorous but I didn't find it particularly funny at any point. It bored me and I was uninterested within seconds.

Dangers do come with selfie sticks and it's definitely great to be aware of them and to take precautions but it's not as serious of a topic as the video makes it out to be. People aren't as clumsy as the actors in the video were, scenarios as showed in the video aren't common, everyday type things.

Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Communication

What do you think these advancements in the world of AI will mean for us as digital communicators? How does this change the way we think about communication?

The advancements in the world of AI also relate to advancements within many other aspects of this world and each of our individual lives. AI has the power to assist with technological advances in our hospitals and doctors offices, our personal lives, connecting people all around this world, etc. For us as digital communicators, I feel as though this means drastic change within the workplace. Human jobs will be able to be done by robots and machinery and less people will be employed. This is, in a way, a very tragic thing seeing as the unemployment rate will grow and people will be out of a living and a source of income. On the bright side, we will be able to rely on machinery to do our jobs. Of course, technology can malfunction and it has the potential to cause a lot of trouble.

I see advancements within AI as both a privilege and a setback. We will be able to relax, lay back and no worry about getting up early for the job that can now be taken care of by robots. BUT, where's our money going to come from? We need jobs. Unless someone comes up with a genius way for us to get an income, there is a major fault in this idea. Some aspects of AI are all around positive, such as holographic imaging, self driving cars, etc. There aren't faults within these that have the potential to ruin a life.

I think that this can change the way we are completely mesmerized and amazed by AI to us thinking that maybe it's not as perfect as it seems. This changes the way we think about communication because soon there'll be no point in going to see someone, we'll be able to 3D print them or see them in holographic form. This seems VERY unnatural and the thought of society coming to that makes me uneasy.

Stereotypes or Stereo-Gripes

http://www.youtube.com/feature=player_embedded

"Why shouldn't men be just as upset when comments like that are broadcasted on public TV?" They should. Just because women are degraded more doesn't mean that men don't deserve the rights to their own feelings.

The ad was, from what I saw, made with good means but certainly has the potential to strike a chord in some people/most of society. Nowadays, things that touch on the topic of a genders pride can catch peoples attention and make them form strong opinions. "Is it done in good taste - with a little humour - or is it highly offensive?" I don't think it's one or the other, I think it is both or decided by each individual by themselves, for themselves. Speaking for myself, I find the people giving their feedback in the ad to be, at times, insensitive and rude but at other times, it was laughable. I don't really understand the point of this ad. "Can a truck make a man rugged?" I wouldn't know...I haven't talked to this "man" myself and I don't know him therefore I have no answer and a bunch of random people telling me their opinion isn't going to assist me in forming my own. The purpose of this commercial was pretty pointless to me.

Stereotyping in advertisements happens a lot just solely within the people playing specific parts/characters. Advertising is a business and you have to do certain things to get your point across, which I get, but when you are doing extra and pushing the line where the stereotypes became a targeted and negatively purposed thing, that's stupid. We all know of the extents society can take once enraged and it's just not a smart thing to test them.

Great Idea or the Meanest Thing Ever?

A Barber Is Giving Free Haircuts That Make Misbehaving Kids Look Like Old Men

This isn't necessarily a great idea but I don't hate it. Hair does grow back.

The cruelty in this whole haircut thing is very evident. I think in this day and age kids do care very much for appearances and doing such a drastic thing to a kid's hair will definitely have an impact on them. I see this whole ordeal as something funny and something that will blow over eventually. I do agree with the fact that this is a smart way to shock someone into correcting their behavior. Letting your kid know the extents you'll go to if they misbehave is clever and prevents them from acting up again. I also do prefer this method of punishment rather than having parents beating their kids thinking that makes anything better or improves something at all. Having this done to a young kid, I think, won't have as high of a impact as it would on a teen seeing as that's when we seem to become more self aware and begin to care for our appearances. Personally, I think this haircut thing is hilarious and I'm aware some people see it as just brutal and unnecessary but that's just my opinion. Hair grows back and this is all just a temporary act that has the potential to cause permanent effect.

You think that's funny?

Cruel and insensitive words will never be cool. Sure, you'll get a few laughs and people will think you're "ruthless" and "hilarious" but really you're just rude. I'm not too sure when things like this became funny but, it sure is popular now. The way I see it, it CAN be funny but there needs to be a line drawn. Saying things like this to your friends as a joke that is certain to be laughed at and blown over is, in my opinion, alright but saying things on any platform to someone you don't speak to or know is, stupid. I doubt half the things that are said on twitter, would actually be said in person. It's crazy how a computer screen has the power to give someone confidence that they wouldn't have otherwise. This type of cruelty is definitely a concern because besides the fact that it can be light-hearted sometimes, words do have an impact and that's inevitable. No matter what human being you say it to, they're still going to have feelings and opinions. I personally, highly doubt cyber bullying will be a thing of the past any time soon and that rules or 'laws' should be instituted. Something that sensors your tweets/comments/posts and only allows you to tweet it if it's appropriate. This could be seen as a really uptight and stupid thing to do but it'd prevent some harmful things from happening. I don't think people really see the full picture and the outcomes that cyber bullying and words in general have on people. People literally die over these things, peoples words brought them to a point in life where they didn't want to exist anymore. It's not as much of a joke as it may seem to be even though people laugh at it. Sometimes you need to take a step back and fully figure out what you're doing, you need to be sensible and smart sometimes instead of ignorant and dumb.

I think twitter should have some sort of sensor for tweets. And I know people are probably thinking 'where's the fun in that?' but it's also like where's the fun in saying a bunch of inconsiderate things to people? If you really wanted to say something, it's just as easy to step up and say it to their face instead of creating this illusion that you're bigger than you are.
